Fugue (from Bulgarian Suite No.1) is written in 9/8 (2+3+2+2) – the meter of a traditional Bulgarian dance. It is a 3-voice fugue with its subject based on Nikriz  – mode used extensively in Balkan, and Middle Eastern music.
Bulgarian Suite No.1 was finished in December, 2000. It consists of four compositions based on traditional Bulgarian folk rhythms and modes. Each one of them can be performed as a stand-alone piece.
