Milen is a Yamaha Artist!

I am excited and humbled to announce that I have accepted the invitation to become a Yamaha artist. Yamaha’s innovation, high standards, and quality instruments are a perfect match for my artistic vision and eclectic career as a pianist, composer, producer, and educator. The ultraresponsive and precise piano action is tailor-made for my fast polyrhythmic structures, while the beautiful rich sound is ideal for my ornamented melodic style and polyphonic textures. The cutting-edge synthesizers and music production tools are also an important addition to my performances, teaching, and studio work. I am very excited to be associated with Yamaha and am looking forward to a fruitful and dynamic partnership!

Performing “Dirtsong” with Black Arm Band on February 15 in Los Angeles

On September 15, I will be performing at Royce Hall (UCLA) with the celebrated indigenous music group Black Arm Band, unveiling the fascinating story of their heritage, language and homeland offering connection to the aboriginal heritage of Australia – a side seldom seen by the wider world. “Dirtsong” is a journey through vast landscapes, songlines and aboriginal communities. Musicians from all over Australia, from rainforests, deserts, coastal towns and inner cities, share the vibrancy of their cultures. Singing in eleven languages, the songs give a human voice to these stories, as visuals by Melbourne’s Daybreak Films provide an rare opportunity to observe the communities in their own settings and their abiding sense of responsibility to the natural world and their spiritual lands.

Besides with teaching, I was busy with playing a few concerts in Los Angeles through the end of the year, as well as working on new music and booking dates for 2017.

Here are some sights and sounds from the past few months…

New Video – “Gorgon” for 2 pianos

A newly-released video of my concert etude for 2 pianos “Gorgon” featuring the great Neema Pazargad. This composition is a part of a book and a CD titled “Modes & Meters Vol.1” to be released later this year, so stay tuned for that.

In Greek mythology, the Gorgon was a terrifying female creature. The name derives from the Greek word gorgós, which means “dreadful” and the term commonly refers to three sisters who had hair of living, venomous snakes, and a horrifying visage that turned those who beheld it to stone. While two of the Gorgons – Stheno and Euryale, were immortal, their sister Medusa was not, and was slain by the mythical demigod and hero Perseus.
This polyrhythmic and polymodal piece is based on two different modes and two different rhythmic patterns (2+2+3 and 3+2+2) and most of the time each player’s hands don’t play in the same mode or rhythm (i.e. Piano I left hand matches Piano II right hand, and Piano II left hand matches Piano I right hand). Sections alternate between smooth and even phrases during which the listener cannot distinguish the different rhythms, and accented phrases where the difference is obvious.
